    I have the line 6-spider III,
    has 4 different channels
    clean, cruch, metal, and insane
    def worth my 100 bucks.
    and the volume goes up to 12 but i usually keep it at 3
    its good for shows, my band does local shows
    and if we even put the volume up to 8, you could hear it down the block!

    If you can afford to buy Marshall, you may want to look at a better amp, such as Mesa Boogie or Hughes and Kettner (sp?). And if you want to go really metal, go with Krank Amplification. That really rocks.
    Marshall is good, but pretty overpriced simply because of its name. And with a vintage style head, you may have a hard time getting those great metal sounds. Marshall had an amp out for a while just for metal, but I can’t find it anymore. I think they discontinued it.
    I went down this same road a couple of years ago. I used Musician’s Friend because they have such a great return policy. I could try an amp, and if I didn’t like it, I could send it back.
    Whichever amp you choose, make sure it is a tube amp and doesn’t have a bunch of digital effects built in. They will ruin your sound. Some people really like Line 6, but it has waaay too much digital stuff built in. So I would avoid that.
    Do your research and good luck.
